The British Hedgehog Preservation Society point out that the dry weather and hard ground can make life difficult for hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) at a time of year when they need to be preparing for hibernation. We can help by leaving out a dish of non-fish flavoured pet food or unsweetened muesli each evening. Bowls of fresh water in several spots around the garden are also helpful. Ensure that ponds are kept topped up to avoid steep sides that could trap and drown a hedgehog - alternatively ensure that there are easy means of escape, e.g. by building up the edges with bricks or providing a chicken-wire ladder.
