The four colour plates of this book, covering 42 species of hoverfly, are beautifully illustrated by Steven J. Falk and in most cases are sufficient, on their own, to help you identify the hoverflies you are likely to see in the garden. However the chapter on identification also includes a good succinct description to the key identification characteristics of each species and is illustrated superbly with black and white line drawings. There are also chapters on the general biology of the group with one or two of the more well known species covered in more detail by way of illustration.
Like other books in this series, this handbook aims to encourage people, whatever their experience, to get involved with recording and research. Topics for research and relevant techniques are discussed.
