After getting a tantalising glimpse of a siskin in the garden at the weekend, this one dropped in to give a better show.
Siskin on nyger seed feeder
In a rush and about to take the kids to school, I glanced out of the window and saw a goldfinch (
Carduelis carduelis) and siskin (
Carduelis spinus) together on the nyger seed feeder. Only the second I have seen in the garden, this bird gave a better show than the one I saw on
Saturday. Just had time to grab the camera and get off a few shots through the window. A very handsome bird indeed - this is clearly a male, the black crown is diagnostic. Interesting that it should be feeding quite happily at the nyger feeder: siskins, like goldfinches, have a fine bill adapted to taking small seed.
