The weather today turned very cold across much of the country. Coming hard on the heels of a recent mild spell, this could spell disaster for those ladybirds tempted to come out of hibernation early. The BBC's Springwatch 2006 survey, run with Woodland Trust and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, has already recorded more than 100 sightings across the country. It remains to be seen whether or not good numbers will be recorded once the cold spell has abated.
