Recent research indicates that black bat boxes are more attractive to the animals than lighter coloured boxes.

Research carried out in Portugal showed that given the choice between white, grey and black boxes, 'Soprano' pipistrelles (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) preferred to roost in the black boxes (except in the most exceptionally warm conditions). Black boxes are an average of three degrees centigrade warmer than grey boxes (and eight degrees warmer than white boxes) due to the absorption of solar radiation. The findings indicate that we should consider painting bat boxes black to make them more attractive to roosting bats. Note, however, that many paints and preservatives could be toxic to bats and water-based treatments are recommended.
