Climbing plants are particularly useful in the wildlife garden because they maximise the use of a normally limited space, providing shelter and nesting opportunities for many animals.

Ivy (Hedera helix) is one of the best plants for wildlife that you can put in your garden. Its late summer/early autumn flowers provide late nectar for many insects getting ready for hibernation; when the berries ripen (as here) late in the winter, they are an important food crop for many birds; and it provides cover and shelter for many animals all year round.
