Like the inhabitants of Cambourne, officers at The Wildlife Trust for Cambridgeshire, which moved to Cambourne two years ago, were also faced with an empty back garden. So they worked to transform it into a wildlife garden, hoping it will eventually be a demonstration of the many ways gardens can help benefit British wildlife. So far they have created an organic vegetable garden, raised beds with flowering plants and herbs, a bird feeding area and a wildlife pond.
Jenny Mackay, Wildlife Trust Cambourne Officer, said one of the best ways to help wildlife locally was to encourage it into residents' gardens. They will be opening up the wildlife garden at The Manor House on Sunday, April 2 and showing volunteers what they can do in their own gardens including building bug homes and planters from recycled wood and planting wildflower plants which attract butterflies and bees.
