Preliminary results of Butterfly Conservation's 2002 Garden Butterfly Count reveal that the top five most populous butterflies in Britain's gardens during 2002 were, large white, small white, red admiral, peacock and small tortoiseshell.

Many recorders for the Garden Butterfly Count (GBC) commented that 2002 was a very poor year for butterflies. Comma, speckled wood and peacock continued with their range expansions into more northern areas; a trend which is attributed, in the source article, to climate change.
