The Tree Council are urging gardeners to consider growing native trees from seed collected locally.

Native trees, perhaps more than any other native plants, will often be a significant boost to garden biodiversity by dint of all the other organisms (especially invertebrates) that they support. In the run-up to National Tree week next month, the Tree Council is giving advice to people who would like to grow native species from seed. Preparation and planting techniques differ according to species, so it is well worth doing your research well.

Many native species will often do well from seed if you treat them well. Not only will you gain considerable satisfaction from growing a tree from seed, but you will be taking steps to benefit the wildlife in your garden. By collecting seed locally, you will also be doing your bit to maintain the local gene pool.
